Review:
Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary defines a percussion
instrument as something played by striking, shaking or scraping. Fitzsimmons
redefines the meaning. Yes, he pounds, rattles and scrapes, but with
such astonishing talent that his end result on this all-percussion
CD is gentle-haunting-magnificence. Every composition is written and
performed entirely by Fitzsimmons, whose percussion stew includes
a Mbira, the African name for the instrument featured throughout the
CD, and, well, the other odd looking pieces flying around on the CD
cover, with Fitzsimmons’ limber arms reaching as if to gather
them for a percussion party. Or a joyful dance. |
